Psalm 99:1–9; 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10; Matthew 22:15–22

Introduction

True discipleship means acknowledging God’s ownership of our lives and demonstrating it through worship, obedience, service, and witness.

Who Really Owns You? Whose image do you bear?

Beloved, if God is to examine your life today, what evidence would He find? Would it be your church attendance, your offering, your Bible Study, or your Christian title? Or would He find a renewed mindset, with a transformed life, an obedient child of God, and a committed disciple-making servant in His vineyard?

After Jesus was told that the image on the coin was Ceasar's, Jesus declared in Matthew 22:21, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”

Let us ask ourselves: If Caesar can claim his coin because it bears his image, what does God deserve from us, since we bear His image? Today, God calls each of us to examine what we withhold from Him.

Render to God: Worship in Obedience

The Psalm 99 celebrates God as the sovereign and holy King. The repeated declaration, “He is holy” (Psalm 99:3, 5, 9), is the psalmist's theological centre. The Hebrew word 'qādôš' means “holy,” expressing God’s absolute purity and uniqueness. His holiness demands reverence, while His justice demands righteous conduct.

The psalmist exemplifies people like Moses, Aaron, and Samuel who called upon God and obeyed His commands. Their worship was not empty ceremony. It involved prayer, obedience, and dependence upon God.

Precious one, have you abandoned the sinful practices, dishonest relationships, and destructive habits from which Christ has called you out? Establish a daily pattern of prayer, Bible reading, fellowship, and obedience to His Word.

Child of God, do you serve passionately on Sunday but practise dishonesty at work, harbour unforgiveness, or mistreat your family during the week? God demands consistency between our worship and our conduct.

Ask yourself: What must I change this week to make my daily life reflect the holiness of God?

Render to God: A Transformed Life

Paul commends the Thessalonians for their “work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope” (1 Thess. 1:3). They had visible conversion from idols to serve the living God (1 Thess. 1:9). The Greek word 'typos' in (1 Thess. 1:7), meaning “example” or “model,” describes how their faith became a pattern for others.

Their experience teaches us that genuine conversion produces observable transformed life. Discipleship is not complete when someone responds to an altar call. It develops as the believer grows in Christ and in turn influences others in the way of Christ.

Our participation in Bible study, discipleship classes, seeking a mature Christian mentorship, and practising what we learn nurtures the ways of a transformed life in us. Identify one former habit that must be replaced with a Christ-honouring practice in your personal ways.

Who are you helping to grow spiritually? Invite a younger believer to study Scripture with you, pray together weekly, and teach them to share their faith. Your maturity should produce other mature disciples. It is rendering your 'typos' to God.

Your Christianity without discipling of others is dysfunctional. Beloved in the Lord, identify one person to encourage, mentor, or help become firmly established in the faith this month.

Render to God: Your Whole Self

The Pharisees and Herodians sought to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus asked whose image appears on the coin. When they answered, “Caesar’s,” He responded, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”

The Greek verb 'apodidōmi' means to give back or render what is due. As Caesar’s image identifies the coin, even so humanity is identified by the image of God, 'Imago dei' (Genesis 1:26–27). As the coin is rendered unto Caesar, our whole self must be rendered unto God without delay. While Christians should fulfil legitimate civic responsibilities, their ultimate allegiance belongs to God.

I call on you to surrender your ambitions, relationships, finances, and decisions to Christ. Ask God before pursuing decisions in your life: “Does this honour God?”

Let us give God more than our Sunday attendance. Use our spiritual gifts to serve, our finances to support ministry responsibly, our influence to promote righteousness, and our words to proclaim the gospel.

Whose image is on you? Render unto God what is God's.

Conclusion

What Will You Render Today?

People of God, God is not merely asking for a portion of your possessions. He is calling for your whole life.

Ask yourself three questions:

- What must I surrender to God?

- What must I change to become a faithful disciple?

- Whom will I help grow in Christ?

Caesar may have his coin, but God deserves His image-bearers. Let us render to God our hearts, our gifts, our service, and our entire lives!

Shalom aleikhem...
