BUILDING ON THE FOUNDATION ALREADY LAID. MEN, USE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES AS BUILDING BLOCKS

1 Corinthians 3:11; 1 Timothy 4:7-8; 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Introduction

Every great building tells a story. Long before the walls rise and the roof is installed, a foundation is laid. The strength, durability, and future of the structure depend on that foundation. As we celebrate Men's Day, we honour the heritage of faithful Christian men who have gone before us. We must also understand that heritage is not just for admiration of what has been done, but a foundation to continue building.

What are we building on the foundation already laid?

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:11, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Christ is our foundation, and spiritual discipline is the building material by which faithful men construct lives that glorify God.

There is this adage, "I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand." As Christian men purposed to make an impact for generations, it must not always be what we command, instruct, or say, but rather the disciplined lifestyle we demonstrate, visible to everyone.

Christ, the Eternal Foundation

In the context of the Corinthian church, Paul addresses divisions and reminds believers that human leaders are merely servants. The Greek word for “foundation” (themelios) refers to the base upon which an entire structure rests. Paul emphatically declares that Jesus Christ alone is the base on which the entire church rests. Away from Him, the Church loses its rest and gets troubled.

For Christian men today, identity must not be built on career success, social status, wealth, or physical strength. These foundations eventually crumble. A godly heritage begins when men anchor their lives in Christ's Lordship, truth, and saving grace.

Billy Graham once said, “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or material things, but a legacy of character and faith.”

S. J. Jones, the hymnist, rightly puts it, "The Church's one foundation, is Jesus Christ her Lord." Jesus Christ is the sure foundation on which Christian men must build for generations.

Spiritual Discipline as the Building Blocks of Godly Manhood

Paul instructs Timothy, “Train yourself to be godly.” The word “train” comes from (gymnazo), from which we derive “gymnasium.” It implies rigorous, intentional exercise.

Spiritual growth does not happen accidentally. It comes out of intentional avoidance of ungodly relations and associations and rigorous training to be godly. Therefore, Christian men must beat themselves to cultivate habits that strengthen their walk with God:

  • Consistent in prayer
  • Serious study of Scripture
  • Thanksgiving and fellowship
  • Service and stewardship
  • Accountability and obedience

Paul contrasts physical training, which has temporary value, with godliness, which benefits both present and eternal life. Discipline is not legalism; it is the pathway through which grace shapes character.

Self-Control as the Mark of Mature Christian Men

Using athletic imagery, Paul describes the Christian life as a race requiring endurance and self-control. Athletes deny themselves temporary pleasures to achieve a fading crown. Christians pursue an eternal reward.

Paul's statement, “I discipline my body and keep it under control,” demonstrates intentional mastery over desires, habits, and impulses. Biblical manhood is not the absence of weakness but the presence of Spirit-enabled self-control.

In a culture that celebrates self-indulgence, Christian men are called to model integrity, purity, humility, and responsibility. Families, churches, and communities are strengthened when men exercise disciplined leadership rooted in Christ.

Conclusion

Today we celebrate our heritage, but celebration alone is not enough. The faithful men before us laid stones of prayer, sacrifice, commitment, holiness, service, and perseverance. They built upon the foundation of Christ, and now it is our turn.

Let us resolve to build wisely. Let prayer be our mortar, Scripture our architectural drawings, obedience our framework, and spiritual discipline our building blocks of Christ-like lifestyle. Future generations should be able to look back and say that the men of this generation stood firmly on Christ, lived with self-respect, and left a legacy of godliness.

Shalom aleikhem...
